US Air Force recruitment questions?
I was born in the UK and am a UK Citizen (Hold a UK passport)
When I was doing my degree (Geoscience) i also picked up forex trading where i made allot of money. Enough to apply for a EB-5 visa and give me a green card. Ive been over to the US several times and love it. From a very young age ive always been fascinated by the Air Force both the US and RAF here.
I would love to join the USAF and serve a few years. But i have a few questions:
1) I have a green card. I know i can enlist but not become an officer. If i serve a year in the USAF and get US citizenship is there a program that will move me up to become an officer? I already have a degree.
2) Am i likely to "fit in" basic training and tech school? I was mainly thinking because of my accent. Im an out going person so im not shy or anything.
3) I had high scores in high school (GCSEs and A-Levels over here) so would likely be okay with any tests they throw me to join. Is a recruiter likely to not want me to sign up? or treat me differently than any other regular enlistee?

Hello.
SURE. It is very possible that you can join the US Armed Forces.
But, why? Why are you not serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces?
OK. Here is my take on this:
#1. IF you hold a legal immigration status (Green Card) you CAN enlist into the US Armed Forces. And the benefit to becoming a US Citizen has been improved for people in the US Armed Forces who are nationals of their home country since President Bush signed legislation a number of years ago allowing people serving in the US military to ALMOST immediately become US citizens by virtue of their serving in the US Armed Forces. Instead of waiting like others who immigrate to the US and apply for US citizenship – members of the US Armed Forces can apply as soon as they join the military and maybe within a year they can become a US citizen.
#2. The Air Force has the least of programs for enlisted to become an officer. And those few quotas are hard to receive and not a great guarantee – no guarantee. Usually a small number of people around the 8 year point get selected for officer training in the Air Force to make the program look good to the public.
#3. The US Army has the greatest need for officers and they have a better program for commissioning soldiers from the ranks.
#4. That you already have a college degree is a plus for you as the US military wants all its officers to have a college degree.
#5. Fit in? You are a Brit. We speak the same language. We are all cousins. Sure you will fit in. We Yanks have heard your accent on a regular basis and are most familiar with it. It will be funny when you have to explain that when you say you are "going to knock her up" that you mean that you are going to knock on her door to visit rather than make her pregnant as we use the term. But, that is fun and we like to hear these differences.
#6. Go to the book store and invest $20 bucks on yourself and buy a Practice for the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test booklet. Work it. Before you visit a recruiter. We use this test to determine if you have the aptitude for certain US military jobs.
Questions:
A. Do you really want to become a US citizen and swear allegiance to the USA and revoke your allegiance to the Crown?
B. Why do you reject serving in the British Armed Services?
C. OH! How old are you? Age limit for the Air Force is 27 years. Age limit for the Army is 42 years.

1. Yes there are programs to go from enlisted to officer. You would not get your citizenship that quickly unless you are already within the time frame to apply or deploy to a combat zone though.
2. You will hear allot of different accents in the military. You may get a bit of ribbing over it, but nothing to worry about.
3. Nope, lots of green card holders enlist every year. The recruiter just cares if you are qualified.
