I travel to U.S.A. on a regular basis and have opened a nationwide current account because there are no charges to use the debit card or ATM’s abroad.
I never take foreign currency with me as the best rate is from the ATM’s once there. I find travellers cheques a rip off as you pay extortionate commission when changing them to $.
Purchase approx $50 to take with you for tips and ready cash for your arrival
in USA.

Do you mean in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland? it varies.
Your best bet is probably to exchange dollars in the UK at a local bank. Avoid currency exchange places. Better still bring just a few pounds from a bank at home and use the ATM when you get to the UK. I do this pretty much every year.
Just make sure you’re ATM card will work in the UK!
In the US. Think about it – who wants dollars in the UK? Take them to where they’re wanted, and you’ll get a better rate.
