You would have probably got a better deal over there but now post office is probably best option, they dont charge you for exchanging foreign currency!
Well Brit, I would say the best way to convert thousands of U.S. dollars into British pounds is to buy and eat SCADS of fat food.
buy cheap electrical items from the states and sell them for a profit when you come back to Britain!
Your bank prolly doesnt charge. some do, some dont. 3k isnt that much to care about, the loss of .003% is not even noticed, and by the time it is, you will have spent it, so Gratzi and keep the line moveing.

hey dude first when you should go to any national bank , for eg, in INDIA we have Reserve Bnk Of India , go to such banks and they will change any currency to any one

I would suggest to it back home. I’m from Canada, and have always exchanged the money in Canada…My bank gives me a MUCH better rate then Las Vegas.
look in the travel agent windows to see who has the best transfer and the lowest fee
